Flip Sarta is a multidisciplinary artist from Upstate New York, currently based in sunny Los Angeles.

He loves playing with form, pushing iconic and familiar subjects to the brink of abstraction in a way that allows him to play outside the “rules” and break expectations. Whimsical and mischievous creatures show up in various formats, from sculpture to fiber arts to illustration, taking inspiration from the folk art of many cultures: Nordic, Eastern European, Latin American, Pennsylvania Dutch folk art, and neolithic art. Silly creatures, bold patterning, and the human connection to the past capture his heart most.

Through freeform sculpture and a loose-yet-dedicated sketchbooking practice, Flip has cultivated an anti-perfectionism ideology. By immersing himself in the art of play, experimenting with style and medium, and leaning into happy accidents, he is able to bring about unexpected and exciting results during his creative process.

Flip aims to capture dichotomous and opposing themes: from celebrations of sweet and cozy moments blanketed by the sorrow that they won’t last forever, to holding joy and playfulness in a cruel and unjust world. His creatures and scenes are whimsical, warm and appealing, yet twinged with a melancholy or awkwardness that keeps them grounded to our imperfect reality.

He deeply values community and involves himself in local events, galleries, and co-ops wherever he goes. In Los Angeles he hosts and curates an annual charity comics showcase, Out Loud Comics, highlighting local queer comic artists and fundraising for the LA LGBT Center. He also loves to host workshops both locally and abroad.
