SQUEEKS! in Progress

June 2025 - Burbank CA

SQUEEKS! is an ongoing sculpture series of whimsical creatures exploring the beauty of the world. The project currently consists of over 100 unique, hand-painted sculptures, as well as photographs documenting their travels to various important locations in Southern California.

“SQUEEKS! In Progress” marks the halfway-point of a planned year-long project — the artist’s self-proclaimed “LA Thesis,” commemorating his fourth year in Los Angeles.

The genesis of the project springs from a few places. First and foremost, the necessity to create physical, tangible, hand-made art in the wake of the AI wave. Fingerprints on clay, shimmering reflections of glitter, and the charm of scale are things that can only be appreciated by in-person viewing. The project also came from a desire to play. The freedom to make something perfectly imperfect. “I’ve been able to achieve a looseness in clay that I have yet to be able to capture on the page.”

The photographs in this collection document the mundane and wonderful places that hold significance to the artist. When photographing the Squeeks, many people stopped to observe or talk with the artist about his work. “It is wonderful to make human connections through art — especially when these creatures hold a piece of my soul.” The connection to physical locations is essential to honor the time spent in California.

“Working on this project has been transformative. I feel like I have unlocked a part of myself I wasn’t allowed to have. There is a power in making naive art that is like nothing I’ve ever experienced. True freedom, true expression, true play. I am thrilled to have made it to this point and excited to see how the collection grows.”

A fun and low pressure zine-making workshop at the Debs Park Audubon Center! This event was Flip Sarta's Capstone Project for the Coastal Leadership Program with Audubon California.

During this workshop, Flip Sarta discussed the idea of a 'culture carrying capacity', the power of being an artist and community scientist, and how to make a zine! This beginner-friendly workshop provided a great place to meet other folks who love nature and art -- no drawing required.
